Mountain Biking in the Dolomites: Sport and Fun Amidst Nature
A holiday in the Dolomites at Hotel Europa means you can enjoy sports right in the renowned Sellaronda area. Regardless of your preferred type of cycling, there are many options available. You can explore the numerous Dolomite passes or ride on the quieter gravel roads that lead through the mountains. For the more adventurous, there is the opportunity to tackle the single trails designated for the famous HERO race. It is always a pleasure to seek out new routes and discover unexplored hills and mountains with their summer colors.
Dolomites and Sellaronda: A Paradise for Bicycles
Passo Gardena, Passo Campolongo, Passo Pordoi, and Passo Sella are the four passes of the Sellaronda. The more determined can include Passo Fedaia and Passo Falzarego to increase the difficulty of their tour. All these passes have made history in cycling, not just during the Giro d’Italia.
For mountain bike enthusiasts, there are numerous single trails and “free ride” routes in the wild. The climbs should not be daunting, as there is the option to use the lift systems to reach the top of the routes. For those who are less fit but still want to tackle the climbs, e-bikes can be rented and recharged at the many charging stations around the Sellaronda.
Throughout the summer, many cycling events are organized around the Sellaronda. For enthusiasts who want to spend a day cycling without worrying about cars, there is the Sellaronda Bike Day. For the more competitive, there is the “Maratona dles Dolomites,” held annually since 1987. For mountain bike lovers, the “Sellaronda Hero” is one of the toughest off-road races in the world.
One of the most popular routes is the Sellaronda MTB Tour, which traverses four Dolomite passes: Sella, Gardena, Pordoi, and Campolongo. This route, approximately 58 kilometers long, offers a combination of challenging climbs and breathtaking descents, with incredible views around every corner. The Sellaronda can be completed in either direction, with the option to use the lift systems to reduce the elevation gain.
For those who prefer a more relaxed approach, Val Gardena also offers gentler routes, ideal for families and less experienced cyclists. The Val Gardena Trail, for example, is a bike path that connects Ortisei to Santa Cristina, passing through Selva. Along the way, you can enjoy charming landscapes, cross small villages, and stop at picnic areas for a refreshing break.
